I decided to create this blog to help people let their dogs be the best they can be. I'll be posting tips on training, things from the basics of sit, lay down, stay to doing tricks such as rolling over, playing dead etc. I also want to use this blog to give exposure to dog rescues in the NW area. [Maybe surrounding areas as well, who knows!].
A little about me:
I have grown up around dogs my entire life. I work in a small animal vet clinic. I am not stuck on simply one method of training. I will however say now compulsion training does not bother me. Compulsion training is basically 'punishment' training. Positive reinforcement methods work REALLY well. However, when you do have a serious situation IE: an aggressive dog, you really want the dog to stop immediatley, not months after the animal has attacked several people or other dogs. Compulsion training reminds me of touching a hot stove. Someone says don't touch the stove, it's hot, you'll get burnt. You go for it anyway, the person distracts you with something so you don't touch it. What happens when the distraction isn't there? You touch the stove, it's hot, it burns, you won't touch it again. Lesson learned immediatley. I don't think you should beat your dog, but I do think it has it's place. For the most part I'm all about snacks and positive reinforcement, as well as using the 'Nothing in Life is Free' policy. I am a fan of choke chains used properly, as well as martingale collars. Overall I like a lot of different things, but I'm here to tell you now this isn't going to be super fluffy.
